New products from seaweed
The international and national seaweed industry is growing rapidly. The growth is driven by a global need for finding new and sustainable solutions for food and feed ingredients, biobased chemicals, polymers and biomaterials.
The main goal of this project is to process macroalgae biomass for obtaining high yields of pure products (poly- and oligosaccharides), bioactive compounds and crude fractions with potential for pharmaceutical, medical, nutraceutical and food/feed applications.
Employing enzymes for treatment of biomass and/or upgrading of products (in collaboration with P3) is another key activity.
An underlying need is different levels of characterization of the isolated compounds and fractions, including bioactive properties. The SFI-IB consortium have leading infrastructure platforms and methods in this context.
